Extensive Market Search Leads to PSS Hire

An extensive search of the market to find companies offering the latest gas flow stopping techniques and technologies has led to PSS Hire, the UK and Ireland’s leading utilities and pipeline equipment provider, being awarded an £800,000 contract to supply gas distribution company Wales & West Utilities with innovative gas flow stopping equipment.

PSS Hire is the sole distributor to ALH Systems in the UK and Ireland and has worked closely with ALH Systems and Wales & West Utilities to make sure the transition from their existing gas flow stopping equipment is as smooth as possible.

Wales & West Utilities is the first gas distribution company in the UK to utilise ALH System’s innovative twin bag tube system which allows the insertion of two flow stopping bags into the gas mains through a single drilling hole. This method reduces environmental impact and improves productivity whilst providing significant cost savings, potentially saving utility organisations hundreds of thousands of pounds each year.

Paul Breakey, Technical Engineering Manager working on behalf of Wales & West Utilities said: “We carried out an extensive search of the market to find an innovative gas flow stopping method as an alternative to the traditional means of flow stopping low pressure gas mains and selected ALH System’s equipment. It allows two flow stopping bags through a single drilling hole. The bags act like balloons, keeping gas where we want it, saving the need for it to be turned off. It also saves on excavations, reinstatement and time as well as reducing the environmental impact with fewer landfill trips with waste. It meets all the UK regulations, is easy to operate and we’re the first in the country to use it”.

As well as twin bag tube systems, PSS Hire is also supplying other equipment as part of the contract including special flow stop bags. PSS Hire forms a division of A-Plant and supplies a vast range of specialist products and services to the utility, civil engineering and associated sectors. The range includes gas distribution flows topping, tapping and camera entry systems.
