Wigton Lane, Sewerage Main Replacement
The existing sewerage main running through Wigton Lane was in poor condition and leaking at various points which wasn’t very pleasant. This scheme was to replace the existing main with a new 355mm and partly 450mm polyethylene main.

McElroy T500 Series 3 Butt Fusion Machine (full kit) including Internal & External De-Beaders. Electro-Fusion Box, E/F Accessories & the Bead Diagnostic Instrument
The project took place in an area of Leeds which is extremely high profile and there were a number of challenges posed by the environment in terms of noise levels, access, disruption to residents and the physical layout of the job.
The solution was to offer a package to Thermofuse using a TracStar 500mm fully Automatic Butt Fusion Machine, which allowed the strings of pipe to be welded in-situ. The external beads were removed and then analysed with the Bead Diagnostic Instrument to ensure positive welding results. The pipe strings were jointed together with Electro-Fusion couplers and this was all being verified by ControlPoint’s BlueBox technology within PSS’ Electro-Fusion equipment via the Smart-Phone App.
This solution not only minimised the disruption to residents by reducing the working area, it also increased the number of access points to the residential properties. PSS Hire ensured the equipment on site worked efficiently, ensuring the project was completed on schedule whilst still managing the costs on budget.
The project was completed ahead of the programme and within budget.
"From the early engagement with PSS Hire, we managed to collaborate really easily to overcome the significant challenges that this scheme posed. The equipment is to an excellent standard and using a suite of innovative products like the, BDI and the Electro-Fusion joint analysis allowed us to offer a much more cost effective solution to our client. The backup service provided by PSS Hire has been first class throughout the project and has enabled us to react to the stiff test of the programme in terms of notice to attend site. As we are entering the final phase, we are in also ahead in terms of the overall programme."
